How to Make a Good Impression During an Online Interview with a Japanese Company

Background of Online Interviews in Japanese Companies

The advancement in technology and the global impact of the COVID-19 pandemic have led Japanese companies to implement online interviews for their recruitment process. This change is especially advantageous for candidates living abroad or in remote areas as it reduces travel costs and logistical issues. Furthermore, online interviews provide companies with a flexible and efficient method to engage with global talent while upholding traditional values of respect and professionalism.

Standard Format of an Online Interview

The structure of an online interview with a Japanese company typically follows this format:

Greetings:

  • The interview begins with formal greetings. Candidates should bow (if visible) or nod slightly to show respect and greet the interviewer with “よろしくお願いいたします” (yoroshiku onegaishimasu).

Introduction of the Candidate:

  • When prompted, the candidate briefly introduces themselves, stating their name, educational background, and professional experience. It’s customary to mention why they are interested in the role and the company.

Questions from the Interviewer:

  • The interviewer will ask about the candidate's experience, skills, and motivations. Candidates should answer concisely but with enough detail to showcase their qualifications. Be prepared to explain your previous roles and how they align with the job.

Explanation of the Company:

  • The interviewer typically provides an overview of the company, including its values, work culture, and business objectives. This is a chance for the candidate to demonstrate knowledge about the company and express how they can contribute to its success. Always read the company website before the interview to express why YOU want to be part of their company.

Q&A:

  • The interview concludes with a Q&A session where the candidate can ask thoughtful questions about the job, team dynamics, and career growth opportunities. Asking informed questions shows enthusiasm and interest in the position.

Tips for Online Interviews with Japanese Companies

  • Punctuality & Professionalism: Log in 5-10 minutes early and wear business attire. Being on time and well-dressed shows respect.

  • Technical Setup: Ensure a stable internet connection, use a microphone and headset/earphones, and choose a clean, distraction-free background.

  • Formal greetings and attire: Even though it’s online, dressing formally and greeting the interviewer respectfully (bowing or nodding) is important to make a strong first impression.

  • Company Knowledge: Research the company thoroughly and tailor your answers to reflect their values and mission. (THIS IS THE MOST IMPORTANT!!!)

  • Be Prepared: Practice common interview questions like "Tell me about yourself" and highlight specific achievements that demonstrate your value to the company.

Conclusion: By understanding the format and maintaining professional etiquette, you can leave a positive impression and increase your chances of success in an online interview with a Japanese company.
